Heavy Rains Couldn’t Keep Kampala Away as Nakasero Hospital Marked World Patient Safety Day

World Patient Day

Heavy rains swept across Kampala on Thursday 17th September morning, but they did little to keep people away from Nakasero Hospital, where a screening tent steadily filled with patients and visitors seeking to know more about their health.

The activity was part of Nakasero Hospital’s commemoration of World Patient Safety Day 2026, held under the theme “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases.” The day focused on a message that is easy to overlook: some of the most important health risks can develop silently, without obvious symptoms.

Throughout the day, members of the public received free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, while healthcare teams used the opportunity to engage participants on the importance of regular health checks, prevention and early detection.

For many who stopped by, the screening offered more than just a reading on a monitor. It opened conversations about health risks that may otherwise go unnoticed and encouraged people to take a more proactive approach to their wellbeing.

The turnout was particularly meaningful given the morning’s weather. Despite the rain, people continued to make their way to the screening tent, turning what could have been an ordinary Thursday into a day centred on awareness, prevention and patient safety.

The event also reinforced an important principle of safe healthcare: early detection can make a difference. Knowing your blood pressure and blood sugar levels is a simple step, but one that can help people recognise potential risks and seek appropriate medical attention early.

Nakasero Hospital extends its appreciation to everyone who braved the rain and participated in the screening, as well as to the management and staff whose support made the initiative possible.

As World Patient Safety Day come to a close, the message remained relevant beyond a single day: you do not always have to feel unwell to check in on your health.

Members of the public are encouraged to make regular health checks part of their routine and to visit Nakasero Hospital whenever they need support in understanding and managing their health.

Happy World Patient Safety Day 2026.
